This extension to an isolated farm building incorporates key elements of the existing vernacular – the locally sourced stone, the pitch of the roof, and the slate colour for the new powder-coated metalwork – and combines them in an uncluttered modern idiom.
The design maximises the dramatic views out to the south and east, aided by the clerestory glazing - which also serves to ‘decouple’ the plane of the glazed roof from the dressed and rough stonework below.
The twin ridges of the steel frame incorporate mechanical extract ventilators and also support the glass beams that further heighten the transparency of the roof.
