This duplex apartment is located in a building that was designed by the same author and was conceived with the client to have an open layout. The design intent was to create as many common areas as possible in which to spend free time.
The apartment consists of 2,335 square feet on the lower level plus a terrace, and an upper level of 1,937 square feet. The lower level consists of a large common living room area (zone 1), dining room (zone 2), kitchen with a bar (zone 3), and terrace (zone 4). There is also a large wardrobe and bathroom as well as a guest room with walk-in closet and bathroom. Stairs lead to the upper level that accesses the “winter garden” area and large terrace.
On the upper level is the master bedroom, a child’s room, and a kitchenette with built-in wine refrigerator. In the summer this space can be integrated with the terrace by opening a large double sliding door and in cooler weather it becomes a cozy corner providing an expansive view of the terrace.
Two ambient areas have been created, the first located by the kitchenette, in which the sink area can be transformed to a flat surface for working or as a bar for relaxing and drinking wine (zone 5). The second area consists of a mini library with two shell chairs that can provide a space for relaxing, reading, or socializing (zone 6).
A large terrace (zone 7) is accessible from all upper level rooms and is surrounded by a jardiniere that holds a variety of greenery. The jardiniere doubles as a bench under which a hidden LED strip illuminates the terrace. There is also comfortable outdoor furniture on the terrace, a sun bed, garden parasols, and a shower.
Bricks are a motif that run along both levels, connecting them. With their strong texture and color they provide a nice contrast to the large areas of glass and furniture. The furniture and lighting are a mixture of classic pieces from the past and modern designs.
