Family Apartment in a Listed Building, Thessaloniki
Located on the third floor of a listed building in the center of Thessaloniki, the apartment sits within a structure whose facades and shared interiors had been recently restored prior to renovation. Within this specific unit, however, all flooring, interior doors, windows, and original plaster decorations had been previously removed.
Concept and Design Approach
Designed for a four-member family, the project reinterprets the apartment’s original spirit while accommodating modern needs for flexibility, comfort, and functionality. The existing floor plan was largely preserved, enhanced through subtle, strategic interventions. Neoclassical details—windows, doors, and plaster moldings—were revived and integrated seamlessly into a refined contemporary setting.
Spatial Organization
Storage needs informed both layout and form. A continuous built-in composition runs from the entrance hall through the main corridor, combining entrance closets, linen storage, a home office, and seating. This volumetric arrangement transforms practical necessities into a defining architectural element. Bedroom layouts were adapted to include spacious walk-in closets, optimizing flow and usability, particularly in the bow-windowed room.
Common Areas
Living and dining zones are visually connected yet subtly separated by a black metal shelving system with a rotating TV base, defining space without enclosing it. Bathrooms were reconfigured for better proportions, while the kitchen is organized into two parallel zones for preparation and storage, anchored by a black metal table against a chalkboard wall for intimate daily meals.
Material and Color Palette
A white backdrop warmly welcomes natural materials : oak flooring unifies living areas, ceramic tiles define the kitchen, and Greek marble brings texture to the bathrooms. Feature walls with decorative plaster moldings recall the building’s neoclassical past, while warm reds, pinks, and cooler blues appear in select furniture. Black details and subtle brass accents in lighting, handles, and furniture introduce a touch of quiet luxury, balancing heritage and modernity.
