On the Silver Coast, near the cliffs of Praia D'El Rey, the place is characterized by the strong presence of the Atlantic Ocean, with the Berlengas archipelago in the background, as well as the frequent strong winds common along this coastline.
The duality between the desire to contemplate the grandeur of the landscape and the need to create protected domestic environments determined the guiding principle of the project.
The house, positioned parallel to the coastline, consists of two overlapping volumes, each serving a distinct purpose. The lower volume acts as a plinth, delineating and defining the more sheltered outdoor areas of the house. Conversely, the upper volume, arranged in an L-shape and supported by the plinth, embraces the extraordinary natural landscape that characterizes this territory. Below this upper volume, a shaded transitional space emerges, harmoniously connecting the garden and the patio.
The plinth, distinguished by its resistant material and sandy color, acts as an articulating element, linking the spaces from the east-facing entrance to the wide staircase that leads us to the West-facing terrace-belvedere. Each space has distinctive features: The sheltered and shaded entrance to the house stands out for its materiality. The garden, facing south, accommodates the solarium and the pool in seamless continuity with the staircase. The patio, a 10x10 meter square, is characterized by its intimate and protected atmosphere. In contrast to the enclosed space of the patio, the terrace opens up to the vastness of the ocean.
The imposing staircase leading to the viewpoint terrace is the most striking element of the project. This element transcends its functional purpose, becoming an expression of the celebration of the beauty and grandeur of the Atlantic. With each step, we are invited to contemplate the vastness of the ocean stretching to the horizon, highlighting the deep connection between the house and the surrounding nature.
Inside, the main spaces of the house are located on the upper floor, allowing for a constant connection with the landscape. Downstairs, on the other hand, are located the leisure and living areas and the guest bedrooms.
