Bringing joy to the humblest of tasks, our smallest project to date makes the most of the mundane. Located in a low-income neighborhood in south Houston, the project services a small apartment community of blue-collar workers and immigrants. With an eye towards community empowerment, durable and basic materials procured from nearby retailers are coupled with simple detailing to accommodate the use of resident labor. Intentionally located to create an enclosed communal space between the two, the shed remains shaded for most of the day thanks to the mass of the apartment building which it serves and the adjacent trees. Natural ventilation via opposing operable windows and an abundance of clerestory windows mitigates electrical load requirements.
