The Eye Face Surgical Institute, located in a highrise building at a bustling intersection north of Toronto, is a 3,000 square feet clinic that serves Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology patients. The Institute meets the Level 3 Out of Hospital Premise standards from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Recognizing that patients visiting the Institute receive treatment of the eye, the nose, and the throat, C & Partners designed the Institute so that circulation, layout, lighting and choice of construction materials reflect the needs of patients who have a weaker vision and are sensitive to light and smell.
Consultation rooms where doctors receive patients are oriented so that each has a window to allow natural light in, and servicing spaces that do not receive patients, such as staff room, clean room and sterilization room, are located in the middle of the Institute. Our design avoided sharp edges and corners, and the Institute’s interiors are decorated with neutral tones.
Another patient centered design element is its air exchange rate, as it is higher than typical clinics. To achieve this, an independent louvre is added to pump fresh air into the clinic from the highrise that the Institute is located in.
