2 Heathview Gardens was originally a large family house that had been divided into three self-contained apartments, and Alice Poole Architects were commissioned to convert the property back into a single family house. Although detached, the property was a dark, Victorian property and the design aim was to optimize the use of space, open up the interior, and bring in as much light as possible.
The house was transformed by changing the position of the front door, creating a large hall with a new staircase and generally opening up the interior. The house was extended by 13 feet at the rear ground floor level to give a living, dining, and kitchen area that was approximately 33 square feet. A two-story side extension was built to accommodate utilities at the ground floor level, as well as a stunning ensuite bathroom to the master bedroom on the first floor. Re-planning the staircase enabled large landing areas to be incorporated into the floor plans which were altered to provide the facilities required for modern living, including ensuite bathrooms to the major bedrooms.
The top floor was extended and opened up into the roof to provide design features and additional space. A design theme of glass, walnut, and light colors ran through the house. Alice Poole Architects designed both the interior and exterior architecture, including the fitted kitchen and all the fitted furniture. To complement the fittings, Alice Poole Architects also carried out the lighting design, soft furnishings, and advised on loose furniture to give a unified, coherent design scheme. The new design added an additional 1,200 square feet to the original area of 4,500 square feet, thereby creating a finished house of 6,700 square feet.
