The JYX project is a contemporary 60 m² house extension located on the heights of a rural stone dwelling in the Cantal region.
Designed by Atelier LEJI, the intervention prioritizes continuity with the existing building, revealing the original interior stonework while adding a lightweight timber structure.
The extension reorients the house to the south and east to capture passive solar gains and open the main living spaces toward the landscape and the garden.
A large covered terrace creates habitable in-between spaces that act as shelter, outdoor lounge, and observation point over the sloped terrain where lamas and alpacas live.
The design follows a bioclimatic and low-tech strategy, using exposed wood framing, vegetal insulation, natural ventilation, and shading from roof overhangs and trees to prevent summer overheating.
Materials are local and biosourced: burnt larch cladding, natural larch interior finishes, white veined stone kitchen counter, and visible mineral/wood contrast.
The extension strengthens indoor-outdoor porosity, making every room directly connected to exterior paths and levels of the steep site.
The project transforms a previously closed house into a cross-ventilated, bright, and landscape-driven habitat.
