‘’The first thing that we should ask ourselves is if in this moment, is it appropriate to combine architecture, painting and sculpture. I think is not just appropriate, in some cases is a necessity. Nowadays, the architecture should be more functional, and cannot exist without sense for plastic values. Architects, like painters or sculptors, need that sense; without it, they will make buildings but would not be architecture. In this moment, architecture can have pictorial or sculptural attitude, and the painting and sculpture can have an architectural sensitivity’’. (Josep Lluis Sert)
Design the extension of the Architecture faculty in that context suppose a challenge in terms of available budget and an exceptional opportunity to gather the art and architectural realms. The main ambition was to create spaces where the user could study different techniques and enjoy art exhibitions generating an educational environment, which is the core of the architectural project. The building is conceived as a simple platform for the experimentation and artistic learning.
The proposed faculty suggest a sustainable growing identifying the structures with historical value from the pre-existing buildings within the plot, to recycle them, demolishing and replacing the non-valuable ones for new classrooms, which are the core of the new building. The proposal, gather all the classrooms in a new 3 storeys building, transforming the remaining spaces below the existing roof in covered patios with specific uses. One of them is the access hall, which has been thought as the main space to exhibit students’s work, therefore is continuously evolving. This area is conceived as a public square open to the street that receives a variety of contemporary artistic performances.
The strategy to place the building on the plot, is based on 3 main premises:
Generate a continuous front facade to the street, which defines the boundaries of the site and gives presence of the institution in the context of the University’s neighbourhood. The main auditorium is located in that boundary, generating an exposed front to the street.
Reduce the construction costs by using the existing structures for areas without acoustic or thermal requirements.
Relate the project with the surrounding context, taking to the limit the pre-existing opening of the old garage roof to generate The Arts’s Patio, which exhibit the work of the school in a daily basis to the Neighbourhood. The architectural programme defines the limits for that space, which also connects the exhibition and introspection courtyards.
The project emerges below the existing structures generating a place for the development of the artistic and architectural realms, and proposing a dialogue between them and the city.
