This is an exploration through a material system that becomes form, function, and support for contextual relationships. The game is ruled by two operations, cuts and expansion. These operations perform several form finding processes, as an expandable surface system.The ongoing investigation into the Expandable Surface System was prompted during the Emergent Technologies and Design programme at the Architectural Association in London. As one test bed of this system, the team conceived an exhibition wall for the End of the Year Exhibition at the AA.Material based algorithms were used to generate cut patterns to form plywood sheets and achieve doubly curved surfaces. The system was parametrically controlled and established a relation between curvature and cut pattern.
