AN L SHAPED PIECE OF FURNITURE BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT.
Nestled within the iconic Cabanyal, the historic fisherman district in the City of Valencia, Spain, the project transcends time, celebrating the contrast between time-honored traditions and contemporary design in the renovation of a centennial building's apartment.
Our goal was to maintain the authenticity of its historical construction elements while infusing a breath of modernity through innovative design concepts. A striking centerpiece—an L-shaped furniture installation—pays homage to the apartment's unconventional historical feature: a former food storage area that once graced its core. This unexpected element, which captured our attention upon our initial encounter with the space, now serves as a bridge between eras. This addition of the centerpiece of furniture also serves as a connective tissue, seamlessly linking various living spaces into a more dynamic, functional, and radiant whole.
Particular care has been taken in the conscientious restoration of building elements such as carpentry, beams, and vaults. The apartment's time-worn relics—existing cement tiles—have also been restored and intentionally left in their original position. Used as both structural and visual elements, they demarcate distinct areas within the apartment, leaving a visible trace of the original layout echoing the architectural footprint of the past and initiating a captivating dialogue between history and the present moment.
This project resonates not just as an architectural transformation but as a harmonious tale of tradition and innovation, etching its story onto the fabric of Cabanyal's vibrant narrative.
