The Ex Office Tosi, situated next to Ambientevario Studio, are symbolic for Formigine, as they are representing the first artisanal nucleus, which enabled the town to firstly develop, originally known as “Zona Pila”. The building once used to host the company: “Tosi Carlo & Figli”, founded by Carlo Tosi in 1880, and specialized
in the production of agricultural machinery, mainly in shellers, which spread in the early1930’s. Shellers, were used to isolate extraneous seeds, from the rest of the harvested. During the Second World War, the workshops suffered damage caused by bombing, which were unfortunately common in that area, and they had therefore been rebuilt right after the conflict. The company, ceased operating in 1975 and in the following years, the building hosted different shops and apartments.
The architectural regeneration project o the Ex Officine Tosi stems from the intention to preserve its historical character through the addition of a new and visible layer to the building. The historic identity of the structure is respected both on the exterior, where the treatment of the façades involves maintaining the exposed brickwork, and on the interior, where the wooden floors and vaulted ceilings are preserved and enhanced as integral parts of the interior spaces. The layering of the contemporary project is evident in all the additions and modifications to the historic building, particularly in the vertical extension and in the alterations of the openings.
The new elements are characterized by the use of the same chromatic tone, highlighting the contemporary intervention in contrast with the historic structure.
The new elevation had been realized thanks to modern and light contemporary materials, which created a particularly interesting contrast with the traditional antique materials of the building, due to the fact that instead of being removed, have been recovered and re-established, in the lower floors. The elevation structure has been realized thanks to the usage of x-lam panels, purposely visible in the inner surface and coated with dark metal sheet. The architectural choices are similarly visible in the window’s intradoses, on the lateral perspectives, as windows have been enlarged both in height, in order to guarantee a better and more efficient lighting, and in the main face’s large openings, which offer a view on Formigine’s city center and a sort of opening of the building towards the exterior environment.
The architectural project has been guided by targeted technical choices, which enabled the seismic retrofitting and the high levels of energetic performance within the structure. The foundations were reinforced, steel hoops were installed, and the extension was built using lightweight structural elements. Furthermore, The elevation was achieved using lightweight structural elements, using light structural elements, has been realized. The energetic improvement, has been obtained by the choice of isolating the entire building, from the interior part, using thermal-reflecting materials and mineral wool.
In the Ex Office Tosi, natural features become an essential architectural element, with a specific value within the project. The plants are accordingly positioned on the main face of the building, as their main aim is to spin the solar-rays coming from South-West and to create a sort of visual and noise barrier between the street and the building.
To conclude, each action of the project, successfully reflects the double aim of improving both the living and functional conditions within the building, while preserving his historical roots. This strategy, points therefore at making the original building stand out, while contrasting it with the contemporary history. This complex antithesis turns out to be extremely harmonious, as it perfectly manages to highlight and enhance what we already own, what is our past and our culture.
