This project consists of designing an architecture studio within a large, completely empty, unfinished space, with no existing finishes. The intervention was based on a strategy of enhancing the pre-existing structure by fully exposing all the original construction elements. Reinforced concrete slabs and columns, as well as the original stone perimeter walls, were all left exposed, offering the space authenticity, character and identity.
Our brief was to transform a long-abandoned first floor, in the center of a historic town, into a functional and characterful architecture studio. To create a workspace that reflected the practice’s identity, encouraged collaboration, and made full use of the space’s natural light and structural qualities. The intervention embraced the raw state of the space, unfinished and stripped of previous finishes, as an opportunity to highlight the original materials and construction elements.
There were no major planning constraints, but the commitment was to preserve and reveal the existing structure.
The functional layout is organized around a central dark volume that structures the entire interior and houses two meeting rooms, a formal and an informal one, as well as a private office. Defined by a modular black metal frame with glass panels, the core dark volume preserves visual permeability and allows natural light to flow through. The remainder of the space operates as an open-plan work area, with large desks for team collaboration.
The materials were chosen for their longevity and neutrality, resulting in a timeless and low-maintenance setting. The stark contrast between the central volume and the rough, existing structure achieves balance between old and new, function and expression. The choice of neutral, durable finishes and the contrast created by the central volume against the exposed structural elements strike a balance between the expressiveness of the original building and the functionality and comfort required for daily use.
By reactivating a long-unused space in the town center, the project contributes to urban sustainability, demonstrating how thoughtful rehabilitation can enrich both the built environment and the community. The floor level where this project is located had long been closed and unused. Its rehabilitation is part of a broader vision for urban regeneration, particularly significant in the context of a historic town center.
