In October 2009, the Tarragona Provincial Government intends to contest the Executive and Management Works by this teaching equipment which brings a School of Arts and Music located in the center of the city of Reus Project.
Initially, we found a disused building between party giving two parallel streets, Vent Street and St. James Street, with a large courtyard, which was a convent and later School of Art Tarragona Province.
The site is elongated, with an area of 649,20m2 and about 44m in length between the two streets.
The planning regulations of the municipality made possible the total demolition of the existing building but conditioned the intervention to the conservation of the protected facade fit of Street Vent and maintenance of the building density of the existing building.
The proposal intends to contest basically two annexes bodies at two streets connected by a link that breathes between two patios, one inside and the other outside. The building is in the basement, ground floor and three floors.
Our objective was to solve simple and functional way this complex programmatic overlap. The intention, accompanied by the simplification of the structure through large spans, reducing the number of pillars, supported by two juxtaposed cores versatility giving access to the circulation as temporary uses and situations, is completed with the clear presence, by the metal skin, the new volume compared to the existing skin, seeking harmony between tradition and modernity.
Thus it appears as a white box, rotunda, at St. Jaume, without prexistencias, and looks over the facade preserved, as shown in the new body created to offer and serve the public. The large interior spaces as the triple-height atrium, generous rooms, etc .., arranged to house teachers purpose and artistic events are complemented by outdoor spaces suitable for outdoor activities, such as the terrace of the first floor outdoor patio or cover, the fifth facade, which has two large rooms.
The different courts and the court ensure maximum utilization in natural light and cross ventilation necessary. The metal skin micro-filtered sunlight and sieved visual both inside out and upside down, providing an intimate space. This, together with the 'Dali' system, which detects the presence and the existing natural light intensity, automatically fit the necessary light at all times. We have tried to convey a sense of simplicity, a certain purity by the proportions and materials used, an austerity that might remind the initial Convent.
The insulation and acoustic absorption of the different rooms, together with the mass and density of thermal insulation provided guarantee us both great sound quality offered for teaching as energy efficiency that owns the building. All these components, accompanied by crisp white and the silence that overwhelms us in their views, are additives that bring us to the calm, stillness, a relaxation which promotes the willingness to learn, to listen, an island of silence in the city ...
