Sited on the volcanic escarpment of Albuquerque’s west mesa overlooking the Petroglyph National Monument, the Escarpment House has panoramic views of the Jemez, Sandia and Manzano Mountains across the Rio Grande Valley. Views, passive solar orientation, maximizing natural ventilation and daylighting influenced the location of the house on the site. The 2,550 sf floor plan wraps around an interior courtyard and reflecting pond creating a sheltered outdoor living space. A geothermal system with a high-efficiency ground-source heat pump and heat recovery ventilator provide heating and cooling. Excess heat from the system is directed to the domestic water heater. A 6.75 kW PV systeminstalled on the roof supplies power to the 3-bedroom home. Materials and finishes are low maintenance and include exposed concrete floors, galvanized metal roofs, smooth finish drywall, zero-VOC paint and natural-finish maple casework. Energy Star appliances and low-flow plumbing fixtures are installed throughout. The house is framed with FCS certified 2x6’s and insulated with a combination of blown-in cellulose and spray-in Icynene.Certifications:Build Green New Mexico Silver Level Green HomeContractor: Bob Ruth / Sunbelt PropertiesPhotos: Martin Stupich
