he brief was to convert a once derelict shop on Clapham’s High Street into a desirable Patisserie and Café. The renovation combines modern design with traditional materials. Use of light and space was crucial in drawing customers into the shop and Café and so the Inside Out team worked closely with the client to understand the service and products which would be offered and this was reflected in the final design and layout.
The use of simple waxed plaster and French oak finish was applied throughout offering a light and modern finish. A solid elm floor was laid to exaggerate the proportions of space and create a conventional, warm feel. Also in keeping with the traditional feel of the Patisserie is the floor to ceiling shelving which runs the breadth of one wall, accessed by a sliding steel ladder.
The lighting - in contrast to the traditional elm flooring and French oak finishes - is of modern design with twisted copper tubing providing a warm and well-lit atmosphere. The lighting ambience is especially key to the shop in enticing customers during evening hours and the reflection of the lighting pools against the wall finishes provide an instant draw from the high street.
