Erlanger Chapel

STATUS
Concept
The intent of the chapel is to capture the idea that the path to connection with the Divine is a Journey. Rarely is it arrived upon suddenly but more of a process taking one further up and further in.

From the main hallway, the Chapel slowly emerges. Within a curved wall, a door beckons one to enter along a sweeping wall of illuminated panels. The elongated entry builds anticipation as to what may be found further within.

Water.
As a basic element, water is the source of life. Throughout numerous religions, water is used as both an external and spiritual cleansing element – it prepares one to come into the presence of his/her focus of worship.

Upon approaching the Chapel, falling water can be heard. At first it falls from the ceiling muffling the sounds from the corridor behind. Further in the water flows along the path on a curved panel altering the sound to a soft trickle mimicking the calming effects of a stream. Finally the water finds a basin at the threshold of the gathering space.

Light.
Light has a depth of meaning in various religions from being associated with spiritual awakening to overcoming darkness and bringing hope.

A small, high window provides a visual connection to the sky and nature, while the translucent walls of the chapel glow with light from beyond creating an ambiance of reverence. Overhead the ceiling appears to float as light floods the walls. Across the gathering space, one's eye is drawn to a slot within the wall where a reflective sculpture is suspended. The sculpture is metallic and directional leading the eye up...

Heart.
For many religions, it is the heart that houses the soul as it is the connector to all other parts of the body.

The culmination of the experience, one finds the heart of the chapel, or the main gathering space. The smooth curving walls and contoured wooden bench create a calm and inviting space where one can simply 'be.' It is here that prayers are offered, altar candles are lit, and peace is found. For larger gatherings, the nested bench can be pulled into the room to offer additional seating.

Sacred.
Ultimately the chapel celebrates the sacred in creating a place where one can collect their thoughts and seek direction and peace. It creates an ambiance of reverence while inviting participation in the Journey and interaction with the elements of water, fire, and light which are common to all religions. Whether a space for quiet reflection or small gathering is needed, the space can accommodate various needs.
