LOLA is collaborating with LIST and SWECO on a masterplan for Erembodegem, after winning an open call from the Vlaams Bouwmeester. Erebodegem is a town located on the river Dender in Belgium. The city asks for a masterplan that directs the growth of Erembodegem, gives more structure to green space, integrates the mobility issue and defines an urban center.
The proposed masterplan is an iterative process, based on relatively small and concrete actions that can change urban space in a fast, visible way. The spread structure of Erembodegem and the importance of open spaces requires a project-based transformation, which is carried out step by step.
The projects can be simple but visible (such as the combination of a bank, a tree and a pedestrian bridge), but they can also be more ambitious and affect daily routes and routines (such as the transformation of the train station). Much of the transformation can be "object-oriented", covering both urban furniture and small structures and buildings.
In addition, four major projects are proposed: these projects affect a large part of Erembodegem. All projects are directly related to the double quality DNA of Erembodegem, which is built up of mobility and nature. The four projects that were elaborated for the competition are explained below. Which projects eventually will be consolidated in the masterplan, will be decided during the process of the masterplan.
P1. The green valley: the valley of the dender, which is three kilometers long in the city, offers an exceptional and varied wet landscape while dividing the city into two. With a number of interventions in the field of program and connection, a much more intensive and qualitative use can be made.
P2: The station. Unlike inland cities where the track is about, like in Aalst or Denderleeuw, in Erembodegem the station is situated exactly in the geographic center of the city. We believe that the station could become the new city center, almost on its own.
P3: Neighborhoods. Erembodegem does not have a large central green space where people can meet, but the open fields that are found behind many homes can easily accommodate this important social function for the city. Through an informal network of paths they can be interconnected.
P4: Economical machine. The industrial area south of the E40 is a no-nonsense production area, which can be improved considerably by sustaining. The large flat surfaces provide plenty of space for water collection and energy production.
