The complex historical-social location of this project defines not only its program but also its urban and architectural strategies. The project is located at El Born neighborhood in Barcelona´s city centre. Its proximity to Museo Picasso makes the response to the site as urban microsurgery. One of the principal urban strategies is to complete the block and align the project to the street. The project tries to react as a social catalyst for the neighborhood by creating a new social space for the citizens. The program is basically divided in two parts. The public program and the student housing. This separation can be read in the formal response of the building. The first two stories contain the access lobby, a cafeteria that uses the plaza, administration offices, aswell a bigger cafeteria for the students. On second floor the spaces are used for cultural program, exposition gallery, a small theater and workshop spaces. The next stories mix gathering-social spaces for the students and the dormitories. The spirit of the project consists in creating a place for the students to take advantage of a city like Barcelona.Making the Erasmus experience even more vivid. Indoor spaces and outdoor terraces give the students a large list to decide where to study or know new friends. The library is located in front of the plaza giving a different scale to the project.Depending of their solar orientation, the façades are treated differently. The south façade reveals the open terraces and the dormitories and the north façade located on a very narrow and historical street responds the the site very different. This north Façade contains historial elements. In this façade the project can be read as an three-partitioned volume. A big concrete base containing the public program responds to the site at street level. Its composition responds to a more plastic and fluid contemporary architecture.Over this base, a white volume emerges responding with the repetition of the classic window openings as the neighborgs. Its free composition responds to the interior passage that serve the dormitories.Behind this white element appears wooden volumes that contain the vertical elements, as stairs and lifts. This façade treatment reveals its true scale in the north façade. The volume as a whole, tries to respond to its neighborg´s urban alignments, heights and formal characteristics. This project tries to regenarate a specific zone in el Born with its program and architecture.
