Every form of life in the Boise Valley depends on the water from the Boise River. This riparian zone, the lifeline, has experienced drastic changes in the last half century. Restricted river flow, destruction of habitat and the formation of a brownfield have rendered this site the antithesis of vitality. There is enormous potential to plug into the context of the area and rekindle the spirit and life that has historically been here. This buliding is designed as an environmental learning center- a place to educate and inspire stewardship for nature. This center assimilates into the landscape and facilitates a passage from architecture into nature. The visitor is transformed by elements in the gallery, lectures in the auditorium, events in the amphitheater and workshops in the classrooms that connect to the river. As the visitor progresses through the building, views to nature open up and invite them out to experience it.This pure orthogonal form opens itself up and wolcomes the pedestrian. To the neighboring apartment complex, this is a rolling landscape with glowing lights that rise from the slope. To the visitor who arrives in a car, this building forshadows the possibilities existing beyond the front door. This building marks the passage and rebirth into nature.
