This
project is located in the historical center of the city of Barcelos, in the
north of Portugal (about 20km from the Atlantic Ocean). The site´s location
faces a street that use to be inside the medieval city walls, ence the name –
Entre Muros, that translates to “Between walls” in English. Today the site is
in the very center of the city, surrounded by medieval constructions, later
overpowered by XVIII, XIX and XXth century interventions, sometimes overlaped.
Still, there is some sense of unity in the area.
The
project itself emulates the rithym of the surroundig buildings through it´s
roof and does so in an “iconoclastic” shape that later is used as a pattern for
the “skin” of the whole building. To be built in 2012, this building will house
7 families in apartments organized around a central volume (that is also
structural) and two bedrooms each. The layout of the building consists on a
straight line where we can access apartments through an outside gallery. The
orientation of the site allows the sunlight to bath the interiors throughout
the whole day.
