The Zodiaque complex in Courbevoie is a fine ensemble of buildings. A Modernist piece, it is, evidently, an example of a great period of architecture, featuring the conceptual components of the époque in that it is constructed on a freestanding platform which is not aligned with the street. But this strange project – a kind of “Unidentified Urban Object” – is more than that. Designed by Henry Pottier, users appreciate its carefully thought out relationship with the environment, evidenced bu its multiple liaisons between various neighbourhoods. It is also a kind of prefiguration of a model of a mixed use urban approach in that it includes a swimming pool, a skating rink, shops, a car park, offices, a hotel, residential units and a creche. Lastly, well designed and well built, it is remarkable from an architectural point of view.
The project gives us the opportunity to build an extension to the complex. Our intention is to bring the Zodiaque closer to the surrounding streets by juxtaposing a series of light, wooden constructions that mount an assault on this concrete mastodon … In all directions, existing links with the surrounding buildings are emphasized, while the shopping centre’s interior plan is considerably simplified. Indeed, everything about the project seems simple, even though it is enormously complex …
L’immeuble complexe du Zodiaque, à Courbevoie, est un bel ensemble de bâtiments. C’est évidemment le témoignage moderniste d’une grande période de l’architecture, et l’on y retrouve les composantes conceptuelles de cette époque : construction sur dalle libre et absence d’alignement urbain. Mais cet étrange projet – « objet urbain non identifié » – est plus que ça : dessiné par Henry Pottier, il révèle à l’usage une vraie attention à son environnement par les multiples liaisons qu’il assure entre quartiers. Il est aussi avant l’heure un modèle de mixité urbaine, puisqu’il rassemble une piscine, une patinoire, des commerces, un parking, des bureaux, un hôtel et des logements ainsi qu’une crèche. Enfin, il est bien dessiné et bien construit, ce qui le rend remarquable du point de vue de son architecture.
C’est une chance d’y intervenir et de venir y greffer une extension. Notre projet cherche à rapprocher le Zodiaque des rues qui l’environnent, en juxtaposant à ce mastodonte de béton des constructions légères en bois qui montent à son assaut… Dans toutes les directions, les liaisons existantes avec les avoisinants sont magnifiées, tandis que le plan intérieur du centre commercial est largement simplifié. Et de fait, tout paraît simple avec ce projet, qui en réalité est d’une énorme complexité…
