This is the interior design for a shisha bar planned in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
In this project, string curtains are used to loosely divide the seating areas from the circulation path, giving the space a sense of continuity. The curtains trace a single continuous line through the entire space, articulating its zones without establishing any definite walls. Though the resulting boundaries remain ambiguous, the sightlines that pass through them and the layering of light generate a comfortable sense of distance and a feeling of place. Appearing almost like semi-private rooms yet never fully enclosed, this configuration functions as a device that lets guests sense one another's presence while still securing their own individual time.
The ceiling finish also changes across the inside and outside of the string curtains. On the circulation side, a metallic coating softly reflects light, lending the space a sense of expansiveness and openness. On the seating side, by contrast, a jet-black finish subdues the light to create a calm, settled space in which to linger. Through the overlapping of these gently partitioned boundaries and contrasting materials, the space offers an experience full of depth and variation.
