The site is one of very few undeveloped lots in a dense residential section of Brookline. The neighborhood is known for it's historic buildings and a major challenge of the project was to create a contemporary structure that respects the historic context. The community was very active in the approval process for this project and we worked closely with them to reach a solution that could be agreed upon.
The building is pushed out towards the street to maximize daylight and privacy in relation to the existing structures. Curving and subdividing the facade are strategies employed to reduce the effective scale of the building. Elements of the facade like the three zones, the different types of masonry reference the context.
