Energy Systems Design is a forward-thinking, pro-environment team of Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical Engineers. ESD’s “cool” office occupies approximately 10,620sf on the second floor of a building in Downtown Scottsdale, Arizona. It is walking distance to hundreds of amenities and is connected to City Buses and the Scottsdale Trolley System. All of our parking is underground and we have bicycle parking as well as showering and changing facilities within our space for all of our eco-friendly employees. We have a breakroom/play space complete with foosball, TV and video games to draw our left brained engineers a little to the right.
We have utilized many sustainable features in our office including reclaimed wood walls, agrifiber core doors, and paper stone countertops, a 100% post-consumer recycled product. The carpets are NSF certified at gold level and the flooring tiles are made from rubber cork. The furniture, purchased from a local company is reconditioned, composed of about 70 percent recycled content. We replaced the 11 existing mechanical units with 7 of the highest efficiency units on the market leaving room for 4 custom designed skylights. The skylights have integral dampers to relieve building pressure and remove heat. High efficiency displacement air ventilation is in the conference/classroom and each office is equipped with variable flow diffusers that allow the occupant to slightly modify temperature. Energy efficient lighting was installed, as well as daylight and motion sensors. The interior offices have glass walls, allowing views to outside and natural light. All plumbing fixtures are low-flow and we utilize a heat-pump water heater that uses heat from the room to create hot water while cooling the surrounding space. Anticipating LEED platinum, we hope to set an example showing that existing buildings with average energy performance can be transformed into the “coolest” most technologically advanced offices around!
