Historically
the Emperor of China holds immense power over the land and its people. In many
respect the emperor is even regarded in the same standing as a god. Inspired by
the ancient crown of the Chinese emperor as well as the saying: “普天之下,莫非王土,率土之滨,莫非王臣” I wanted to create a design that can capture
this essence. The decision to make this furniture as a lamp is because people
always look upon the emperor as the “light” of their lives and willing to
sacrifice everything they posses for the sake of the emperor’s mortality and
reign. The principle geometry of the lamp is very similar to an emperor’s crown
and with this initiation decided; I use the philosophy that an emperor believes
he controls and owns the heavens. By making the internal reflective “crown” of
the lamp in a mirror finish, the sky is captured within the illumination zone.
The lower structure of the lamp represents the emperor’s control over ancient
people’s lives. It is made of a high polish stainless steel structure with
laser cut openings organized in a tornado like placement for light filtration.
When the 2 structures are combined, the lower illumination device (illumination
is done with low voltage led lamp) will reflect light on to the mirror finish
upper “crown” structure while the openings will also be included as well as
distorted in the reflection. The reflected image will represent a circular
light source superimposed onto the sky with a vortex geometry disappearing
infinitely towards the connection point, metaphorically representing the
immeasurable power of the emperor. I envision the emperor lamp will educate its
owner on the greatness of the ancient Chinese emperor and maybe in turn also
absorb some of this power towards him/her!
