Emotional Architecture – Redevelopment Plan for Ogikubo Suginami Central Library

In Jungian psychology, it is said that when people attempt to express their emotions, they tend to draw circles and spheres. While books are products of rational thought, architecture may be something that should be expressed in a softer, more emotional manner.
The site is the existing Ogikubo Central Library, now over 30 years old. Ogikubo, like its station plaza, lacks sufficient civic spaces where people can gather and relax. There is a need to create a place that becomes a symbolic anchor for the community.
This proposal envisions a new library built over water, integrating functions of a museum, library, and restaurant. It aims to become not just a place for reading, but a fluid, sensory environment—one that embraces emotion, softness, and collective experience, forming a new civic landscape for the people of Ogikubo.

敷地は築３０年になる荻窪中央図書館。荻窪は駅前広場もそうであるが市民の憩いの場所となる施設が少ない。特に市民にとってシンボルとなるような場所を建設することが
必要であると考えた。美術館＋図書＋レストランを併用させた水辺の上に建つ図書館を新しく建設することを考えた。
