Emory Proton Therapy Center, one of only a handful in the U.S. and the first in Georgia, sits on a 2.39-acre site in the midtown business district of Atlanta and within walking distance of Emory University Hospital Midtown. The facility provides state-of-the-art proton radiation oncology in an environment that’s designed to promote a sense of well-being and comfort for patients while allowing the doctors and technicians to provide the best possible care.
The building’s exterior architecture is designed to blend into the iconic landscape of Georgia’s capital city while also creating a sanctuary where people can feel comfortable and removed from the urban hustle.
An outdoor courtyard and garden, which serve as a bridge between the city and the Proton Therapy Center, feature natural elements and materials. A “green wall” is used to define the patient drop-off area, as well as mask an adjacent parking structure.
The interior uses color, patterns, and views to create a sense of retreat and healing. Both natural and artificial light are used as a connection between spaces. Sustainable and simple materials are combined with expansive panels of glass to make the space feel open and inviting while offering views of the city.
Inside the expansive lobby are spaces for financial counseling, patient education, a café, and a children’s play area. A variety of waiting areas, from traditional lounges to remote workspaces to tables and chairs, are also available.
The center provides space for pre-treatment with private dressing rooms and quiet seating, imaging, treatment planning, and clinical areas for exams and consultations. Although occupying a large footprint, the layout of the facility is designed to maximize patient throughput and increase efficiency in staff workflow.
The Emory facility features five treatment rooms utilizing the latest proton therapy technology. The massive three-story concrete vault that houses the equipment spans more than 300 feet in length and is masked by a beautiful façade accented with dynamic glass artwork.
