A new institution emerges from the roots of the community and sets the stage for further progress. Emergence is an elementary school concept that begins with a traditional courtyard diagram. The courtyard is then manipulated; opened up and broken apart, to connect to the community and surrounding site. The building form is further pushed and pulled to accommodate programmatic and volumetric requirements. The building wings reduce in height to "bow" down at the street. This creates a more inviting entry, allowing more visibility into the courtyard, while also paying homage to the scale of the surrounding residential neighborhood. The building also lifts up off of the ground in one corner to create a passage from the courtyard to future site development and outdoor athletic facilities. The project was one of four finalists in a widely held design competition for UNO and was designed to achieve LEED silver. The proposal was for a Fast track, Design/Build delivery method with a GMP of 14.7 million dollars, to be constructed within a 10 month timeline.
