The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Dhaka is located on the main road of a district designated as the Diplomatic Zone. It occupies a plot adjacent to the Embassies of the Republic of Korea and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with the Embassies of Canada and the United States situated across the road. Compared to its neighboring embassies, the relatively smaller plot size and the complex requirements program were among the key challenges of the project.
The program includes a consulate, chancery, the ambassador’s residence, reception rooms, staff lodgings, and guest accommodation units. Due to the limited size of the site, it was not feasible to address this multifaceted program through a fragmented layout. Instead, the design brings together distinct user groups—each with differing circulation, privacy, and security needs—into a unified focal structure, while maintaining their spatial separation.
The narrative of the project began with the architects' visit to Dhaka, where they were inspired by the city's architectural references and the authenticity of its local context. The region’s climate and predominant materials played a defining role in shaping the project’s conceptual imagery. Embracing the open-air lifestyle intrinsic to the tropical climate, the design reinterprets outdoor architectural elements such as courtyards, canopies, balconies, terraces, brise-soleils, and covered walkways. These elements were integrated not only for cultural relevance but also to provide shelter from seasonal rainfall, resulting in a series of “covered outdoor” spaces that blur the line between interior and exterior.
By embedding these qualities into the design, the embassy complex reinterprets the idea of a neighborhood. Despite the constraints of a single plot, the use of defined pathways, open and covered street-like passages, and carefully articulated circulation routes creates a layered, spatially rich environment.
The overall layout is structured around a central courtyard that organizes both private and semi-public zones in a transitional setup. The ambassador’s residence and guest accommodations are arranged along the courtyard’s perimeter, while a reception hall opens directly onto the garden and is positioned beneath the residential area. Although the structure is perceived as a singular volume, this planning approach transforms it into a compact compound of smaller architectural units, each with its own entrances, terraces, and eaves—preserving both autonomy and coherence.
The prismatic volumes are animated by architectural features that play with light and shadow, responding to the region’s intense sunlight. The courtyard becomes the gravitational core of the design, enabling complex interrelations between units in a fluid, permeable spatial system. Historical architectural references from the Republic of Turkey, such as the iwan and crown gate, are abstracted and reimagined to provide the building with a unique and contemporary identity.
Material composition plays a crucial role in establishing spatial identity and memory. In this project, Anatolian Marmara marble is paired with locally sourced Dhaka brick, symbolically merging the identity of the representing country with that of the host nation. The limited yet deliberate material palette—comprising exposed concrete, white marble, and red brick—creates a cohesive tectonic language that unites the diverse programmatic elements under one architectural expression.
