The Ello Restaurant was built from scratch on a narrow and long piece of land on São Francisco street, one of the main streets in Jericoacoara, Ceará. While doing the project for the Jericoacoara Dune Village Resort, the Mareines Architecture office was called to work on a restaurant project in the center of the Ceará village.
A place open to the sandy street, integrated bar and visible kitchen was the briefing given by the client - the objective was to bring a sophisticated restaurant to a beach environment, besides a unique gastronomic experience.
Starting from this point, the office was inspired by the atmosphere of Jericoacoara to compose the project. Using a structure of round wood and local wood planks, a roof was created that, with the succession of supports, comprises curved surfaces inspired by the dunes, the main tourist attractions of the region.
The architecture was designed to unite the contemporary with nature, colors, rustic and sophistication. Different from the proposal of vernacular architecture, the idea was to recover the local techniques and context, combining them with the contemporary language. With their feet in the sand, clients can enjoy food and architecture inspired by the typical landscape and raw materials.
The construction was made with local materials, especially eucalyptus, the main raw material that forms the structure. The fences, made with regional vines, give the restaurant a noble appearance, and the taubilha roof is complemented by the woven bamboo lining, which also refers to local traditions. Finally, the use of local labor contributed to enrich the architectural experience and the project result.
As explained by partners Ivo Mareines and Matthieu Van Beneden, the combination of different organic and rudimentary elements enriched the project, which won the Prix Versailles in the Restaurant category for Central and South America and the Caribbean, awarded by UNESCO.
"We opted for a very contemporary and daring architecture, but it also has very interesting rudimentary techniques. These are opposite ideas that were beautiful together, because they ended up complementing each other," they comment.
As in the office's other work, plants play a key role. The highlight of the landscaping are the vines that adorn the wooden parts of the fence - a variation of the conventional green wall concept - refreshing the environment and giving a romantic touch.
The technological resources are low-tech, with all solutions designed with minimum technology for maximum effect, and focus on sustainability. An example is the air conditioning, present only in the kitchen, since the simple materials, the crosswind, and the landscaping already confer a pleasant temperature to the place.
"The people who go to the Éllo are always surprised, and what we are most proud of is the fact that the architecture is one of them. But the most important thing for us is that this surprise is not displaced from the place, we made sure that the person really feels in the city, with their feet in the sand," conclude the partners.
