Located in a relatively traditional region of South India, this project based in the outskirts of Chennai tries to break conventional norms.
Albeit faced with a lot of restrictions from the architecture point of view, the project tries to give a complete face-lift to this otherwise regular apartment.
The underlying layers of architecture and furniture are in greys and blacks mixed with local wood in the shell work, which is then enhanced by the colors of the furnishings and other artifacts in the space.
The living area, entertainment area and the dining space are cleverly merged together and yet they retain their distinctness with partitions and subtle division of the space.
The mater - bedroom maintains its spaciousness with an upholstered bed neatly integrated with a wall unit while the remainder of the space is converted into a lounge/reading area.
The kids-room proved a challenge due to its random circular built. The windows were therefore used as a guild to create surfaces which integrate the study and bed along with a small library.
Due to the small size of the master bedroom a platform setting proved ideal which also serves as a surface for other activities. This left room enough for a small reading corner neatly tucked away.
With its color scheme the apartment did run a risk of looking too dark and dead, but the use of wood and vibrant colors enhance the subtle details that went into the place and also still renders a slight spunk to this contemporary home.
