project: ELECTROLUX KITCHEN DESIGN COMPETITION | THE MEANDER KITCHENprogram: 20’ x 30’ kitchen for the modern family on a $100,000 budgetElectrolux, a leader in kitchen product manufacture and design, sponsored a competition for the kitchen, challenged members of the architecture and design community to present innovative, thoughtful concepts of a kitchen that meets the changing needs of the modern family. Space is defined by a band of functionality that creates autonomous cooking, dining, living, work and storage zones while the porosity of the vertical surfaces maintain conversation and views. Moveable elements in the dining and kitchen zone allow the space to be privatized when needed. The galley kitchen economizes space and maximizes work surface and storage space. A triangular configuration of appliances coupled with a wide galley allow the kitchen to be occupied continuously and frequently. The Meander Kitchen was a response that reestablished the kitchen as the heart of the home and allowed for lost interactions between family members to occur on each individual’s own terms. It is flexible for all the family functions and adaptable for the space to be reconfigured for special events. The space engages art, entertainment and fine dining and while show a different face to each new interactive user.
