A park is an active portion of the hantropic territory, either urban, suburban or 100% natural, which is subject to a more or less radical transformations by the man.An urban park, having the objective of transforming part of the natural landscape into a public field, is mainly subject to a ˆstatus˜ transformation, which unables it to perform a different role in the urban context, a social attractor, a field of confluence of human activities that can determine, therefore, its shape and use.El ˆparque de la Muela˜, situated on the very border of the municipality of El Viso de Alcor, has the special feature of being on the limit between hantropic territory and natural agricultural land.How can we change the role of this border condition, in the local context of a small municipality in Andalucia, in order not to loose the grip on the scale factor, on the role of this piece of landscape intruding−escaping the thick village structure?El parquet de la Muela benefits from a very interesting position in the village. It reaches the centre of the urbanization, still extending toward the agricultural landscape of the Andalusian countryside. Furthermore, this relatively big piece of land (if compared to the dimension of the village), presents a good regional position compared to the greater urban centre of Sevilla.It is not an urban park, still, not an isolated oasis in the landscape. It is a gate to the hills, or a gate to the village.El parquet de la Muela can be thought as a slow place, reachable by the rhythm of the city but still, far from its chaos, its times.It is a place where a contemporary concept of ˆpleasure˜ can be reformulated in order to find a new meaning, a new identity for the "Andalusian hedonism".Sweet is the landscape topography of the land, where a gentle modulation of the ground and the coexistence of hearth and water dilutes the compact urban structure of the village into the open land.This condition makes us dream of an idyllic meeting between man and nature, artificial and spontaneous. A place where the ˆhuman needs˜ can find relief. Like in historical visionary complexes where architecture sensually melted with nature, in a seamless, still clear appearance.Complexes like the villa of the emperor Hadrian in Tivoli (Hadrian was born in Sevilla) represent the materialization of epicurean philosophy, a field to materialize feelings, the most important things in mens life: hedonism as a research of pleasure. Moorish poets described the Alhambra in Granada as "a pearl set in emeralds," in allusion to the brilliant colour of its buildings and the luxuriant woods around them.With these premises we started our analysis; we looked at the urban pattern, landscape condition and the required program.We reinterpret the program with optimistic eyes, trying to turn every figured function into an allegoric moment, an additional value that could be always translated in a creative way during the development of the future project of the park.With an apparently random composition of "happenings", el Parque de la Muela becomes a constellation of fantasy, a superimposition of layers that ultimately contribute to create the new hedonistic park.Architectural archetypes are reinterpreted and "stolen" by history, in order to evoke the everlasting love of men for ruins and time superimposition.Triclinia, porches, nimphea, theatre, peristilium, stadium, gymnasium, patios, aqueducts and grottos offer an illimitate palette of possible interpretations of the landscape.The real relevance and magnitude of those inventions seats in the nuances, the more or less radical experience of the landscape by crossing every different corner of the park.A porch is a semi covered space, looking toward an enclosed open space, a loggia can offer a wider view toward an open landscape; nimphea are intimate moments of natural perception, stadiums and theatres offer wider fields of public happenings, still adapting to the morphology of the landscape.
PLANNING METHOD
El Parque de Epicuro starts from the urban centre of El Viso de Alcor and opens up toward south.It is constituted by the superimposition of nets, for pedestrians, bykes, sport paths, experience paths, logistics and the new sprinkle aqueduct.The linear nets cross nodal points which become the thematic happenings within the landscape: from the city to the countryside, we operate a composition−decomposition of "architectural" moments, localized according to the programmatic density, operating a progressive dissolution of the urban structure towards the natural landscape.The area for the ˆprima fase the actuacion˜ by intruding the urban pattern, presents the highest percentage of programmatic mixture and transformation of the park; The place where the highest condensation of everyday activities happens. Therefore, the space for kids entertainment and the expo−welcome peristilium are localized right in adjacency to the city centre in order to offer easy control and management of the functions.Progressively the program unfolds from sport facilities and theatre to more intimate and slower functions, toward the natural countryside of olive grooves and woods, where the inhabitants of El Viso de Alcor and the neighbouring centres can find privacy, can experience the variety of the Biotopo Alcores, orchards, flower hills, silent water ponds. Places to experience the senses, still offering public functions that take their meaning and origin by the direct interpretation of the natural condition: which better place of a plain to experience the presence of a hill? a sudden topography change to seat under a porch, to experience, protected from sun and rain, the vast south panorama toward the landscape?Furthermore, an advantage of the overlapping strategy is the possible preservation of the important presences in the park: the "fuente de la muela", the constructions and existing pavilions that all contribute, through their reuse, when possible, to figure a new historical condition where all traces of time perform a role in the landscape.
NATURE
As in Morish architectures like the Alhambra itself, where the apparently simple composition of the outside was hiding complexity and allegory in the inside, we set a free but programatic composition of elements which will reveal their caracter by crossing the multiple scenographic paths and sequences of nature.Our proposal runs open to different interpretations and materializations.A column can be a column, but it can be a tree as well. Therefore El parquet de Epicuro, though appearing architecture in the landscape, is a strategy, a method.The botanic aspect plays a very important role in the Biotopo de Alcores.We propose a progressive melting of species from the city centre toward the agricultural landscape, by planning botanic interventions from both sides. In this way,the Parque de Epicuro becomes a real Andalusian space, where, even in a public park, olive trees, orchards, vineyards (all typically Mediterranean species), become design tools and means to explore the taste, smell, view.Together with those natural elements, water ponds and small needlework landscape interventions, memory of the morish architecture of Andalusia, redefine a consistent set of ˆromantic˜ enclaves, where the identity of the existing park can be rescued and confirmed. © NAUTA architecture & research
