Through an invited competition in 2006, FR-EE was commissioned to expand the historic Museo Experimental El Eco designed by sculptor Mathias Goeritz, a German artist who worked closely with Mexican architect Luis Barragán. Built in 1952-1953, the museum had outgrown its space and needed to expand its offices and special services to improve daily operations.
FR-EE developed a rational proposal to add a separate low-profile structure to the existing building, providing it with a corner presence that it previously lacked – and left intact the large entry wall erected by Goeritz. A multifunctional patio is aligned with the entry and the offices of the director and his staff are located on the top floor, equipped with a cafeteria. The bottom floor is occupied by an auditorium, workshop, and a storage space.
To reflect Goeritz’s vision, the façade was treated in a style similar to that of the original building and set at an angle to the structure, creating an empty space of non-parallel lines.
