Located in the city of Vale de Cambra, the "Casa da Eira" (literally “The House of the threshing-floor”) was a rehabilitation challenge with about 400m2 of construction.
A century-old house that was very degraded and needed a major overhaul, that would revive the memory of the original design without forgetting the current needs. The owner wanted a residence where he could have a traditional and familiar setting, not forgetting its irreverent and creative side. A place where friends are always welcome.
This rehabilitation was divided into 2 programmatic blocks. In the first one, next to the entrance courtyard, we find an area previously used as outbuildings and stables for animals, transformed into a living area with a kitchen and a dining room, a toilet, and some compartments that maintain the original design and are of ephemeral use, like gatherings.
The second programmatic block is visible when one goes up the ramp and finds the caretaker's house, adorned with an old granary and lush vineyards, that remind us of the proximity of the mountains and nature.
This is the building of main intervention and the most striking one, where we find the most private and intimate spaces. With dining room and kitchen, these rooms are divided by an element that allows visual permeability. The kitchen cupboard is a guard for the staircase leading to the second floor and also the support of the closet to the living room. It’s a continuous element of connection between the spaces, that grants continuity and uniformity. The living room contains one of the elements added to the building, one of which is the most marking to its form, a reading area that gets out of the building and embraces the nature. After that que can find a room and a more private toilet. The upper floor has direct access to the garden masonry of the building that has a higher quota.
