The vision for the project was to create a simple building which could function in a whole and add an extra quality to the area. A house with its force of architecture, worked through details and good solid materials functions naturally with the church.
The form of the house is classic and tight and the inspiration to the selected material comes from the red bricks and the zinc roofing on the church.
A simple rectangular-shaped house with a 50 degrees zinc lined pitched roof and facades in a hard burned dark reddish brick. The door to the chapel and the entrance to the offices and a waiting room are placed in retracted niches that give a natural shelter from the rain. The niches appear as exact cuts in the bricks because all bricks are lined with the same dark red brick.
It was important to give the chapter a special feeling that gives the visitors the peace and quiet they need to say goodbye to a loved one. Facing north you have a circle formed window above the entrance that gives an evocative light which falls on the chapters brick floor and gives the visitor a weak felling of the life outside the chapters silent and impressive atmosphere.
The new chapel is placed in the middle of the cemetery the same place as the old chapel. The entrance door to the chapel is placed facing north and is visible from the church door.
The church in Egtved now has a chapter that subordinates to the cultural surroundings and at the same time signals how simplicity, quality and aesthetics can match the church beautifully.
