A
distinctive design by Edward Durell Stone, who is recognized as one of the
foremost architects of the mid-twentieth century, has been reimagined in a
singular setting in the hills above Malibu. His case
study multi-family town house development, which was featured in Life Magazine in
1958, was never executed by the architect’s office. Even though Durell Stone
never undertook the execution of these designs, a Malibu resident was inspired
by the published drawings to create a faithful interpretation of the original concept. The one
multi-family unit was completed in a duplex residence overlooking the Pacific
Ocean, where a thorough renovation – and addition - was recently completed. Each of the home’s original 1,250-square-foot
units is impractically small for a single-family residence. The project required an intuitive
reallocation of space and use that would retain the spirit of Durell’s plan
while providing a functional and aesthetic home for the owner.
