The Role of the Church in a Uniform City
Due to the residential environment improvement project in Sipjeong-dong, Bupyeong-gu, the existing church has been established on a new site. On the wide side of the road that runs through the city, there are apartment buildings and Sanggye Elementary School, and Eden Church is located in between them. The high and dense apartment complexes behind the church form a rather daunting and stuffy atmosphere. Eden Church, as a public facility in a densely populated city, is recognized as a comfortable home for residents and induces natural access and use.
A curve that embraces the community
In the project's main facade, a landscape that seems to embrace the community through a curved surface that expresses the arms of Jesus and the wishes of the Holy Spirit. This curve leads residents to naturally access church facilities and public spaces. The tower of the cross, which rises with a soft curved surface, gives the symbolism of the church, and the window that penetrates the curved surface and protrudes toward the front, allows the church to have communication and openness toward the community. The double-layered glass is covered with sabi-stone to secure a sense of openness of the church and create a warm atmosphere in the city surrounded by concrete.
Lower-floor facilities considering residents
The entry space and the lower floor are spaces for church members and local residents, and everyone is free to enter to the interior. The lower floor, which consists of neighborhood living facilities, book cafes, and medium-sized worship rooms where various events or small gatherings can be held, is designed to allow entry through the Sangjeong-ro (15m road). The entry area surrounding the main entrance allows the person who uses the church to actively flow in through a smooth curve. The large worship room in the form of a stand further reduces the boundary between pastors and believers.
