Located in Istanbul the Eczacıbaşı Sports Hall is a multifunctional sports and event venue designed for Eczacıbaşı Sports Club, one of Türkiye’s leading volleyball organizations. Developed in compliance with both international FIVB and European CEV volleyball standards, the building comprises a 4,000-seat competition arena capable of hosting top-tier volleyball matches as well as cultural and entertainment events; a training hall with three full-sized courts; four private suites; the Eczacıbaşı Sports Club Museum; a lodging facility and administrative offices. The entire roof of the 24,000 m² building is covered with photovoltaic panels.
The irregular pentagonal parcel is a primary determinant of the design. Despite the narrow plot, the locker rooms are positioned between the main hall and the training hall for convenient athlete access, while a healthcare unit, fitness center, lounge areas, and dining hall extend around them, creating a fluid spatial network.
One of the building’s key architectural elements is its code-based parametric façade. The 120-meter band parallel to the main road and enables visual communication between dynamic interior and urban exterior, while acting as an environmental filter. Perforation densities in the aluminum mesh panels are defined by interior needs: up to 72% openness with a horizontal slit in office areas for daylight and visual comfort, and 40% transparency in the foyer for balanced daylight and solar control. These values result from parametric optimization based on energy performance and thermal comfort.
Spectators reach the entrance plaza through a natural passage beneath the façade; the sloped terrain forms amphitheater-like seating and stepped platforms. Converging elevation differences generate a complex topography of parking areas, stairways, wheelchair ramps, seating terraces, and the main entrance plaza. Although optimized for volleyball, the arena can quickly adapt to other sports and events through retractable seating and adjustable acoustic solutions.
