The project is an initiative by the Maasai community of Enguserosambu and the local organization THF, which leads the effort. Located in northern Tanzania, at the heart of a traditional Maasai community, the new school is dedicated to providing quality education to primary-level children.
Our team is collaborating with Architecture Sans Frontières and project coordinator Maude Ledoux to design the project. A field mission in April 2023 facilitated meetings with local partners and the selection of the project site.
The socio-political repression of Maasai communities in Kenya and northern Tanzania threatens their access to land, resources, and education. Conceived as a collaborative, humane, and supportive process, the school project provides access to quality education for a population striving to maintain social and cultural autonomy within a sustainable perspective.
The new construction aims to be accessible to the Maasai community near the village of Enguserosambu and the Kenyan border. The project consists of two distinct buildings housing three classrooms, a dining hall, a sanitation block, and a section for teachers.
The architectural intent pays close attention to the community's expectations, emphasizing the aesthetic of forms and colors, spatial organization, fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, durable construction, and a right to modernity and distinctive design. This vision materializes through the integration of vegetable gardens, multipurpose spaces for outdoor activities, thoughtful use of locally available simple materials, a program tailored to the context, and a flexible construction that can adapt to the community's future needs.
