MOD{all} Studio is proud to present the Eco-ttage, a competition entry for the Conover Cottages Design competition in Red Hook, NY.
This Eco-ttage is a dwelling which respects its context, neighborhood, and its modest roots, while embracing its connection to the environment and technology.
The main body of the home is clad with traditional horizontal siding, while the circulation sleeve is clad with a vertical metal siding with a rusted finish, a nod to the maritime roots of the region.
The rear of the cottage tilts toward the sun, like the phototropic nature in plants to lean to the light. The roof not only provides summer shade for the glassy Southern exposure, but a place for Photovoltaic power and possible solar hot water to be installed. This large sheltering roof also collects rainwater which is pulled to rear courtyard. In the winter, the overhangs allow the sun to penetrate the glass and heat the dark floors, creating a heat sink and contributing to the solar gain during cold weather.
At the center of the Eco-ttage is a UtilitySpine which contains all the mechanical (including sustainable) services, and technology connections, all exposed, accessible, and compatible. Not only does this allow for cost-effective installation and ease of operation and maintenance, but also to add/subtract/alter/bundle technologies. The home’s three bathrooms are stacked and hung on the Spine, sharing mechanical services. Having all services centrally located contributes educationally to all that experience it, especially as technology and sustainable systems continue to merge.
On the First Floor, the UtilitySpine separates a GreatRoom containing the Kitchen and Family Room which opens up completely to the backyard; and the service areas of the home, containing a PowderRoom, Mechanical Closets, storage, and circulation. The GreatRoom contains Kitchen wall built-ins but no builtin island, allowing for multiple flexibility (eg. dinner parties, Thanksgiving dinner).
