The ECO River Education Center is an adaptive reuse and expansion of the former Oostanaula River Pump Station built in 1895. The design calls for a “riverquarium” and several smaller aquaria to showcase native aquatic life. It will also provide interactive exhibits, classroom and meeting space, and history and photo exhibits to demonstrate the rich history of Rome.
This interpretive center links the site’s past connections to the river to its current purpose, illustrating resource conservation and good environmental stewardship. The history and growth of the area is linked to the confluence of the Oostanaula and Etowah rivers to form the Coosa River. To truly fulfill its mission, this building must respond to its environment and raise the public’s awareness of the river and the need to protect it. As such, the building itself will serve as an educational exhibit to promote the values of sustainability.
The Education Center will focus on local water resources to teach people of all ages about water conservation. The building incorporates an energy efficient water source heat pump system that utilizes the building’s original pump station river water intake pipes to access water from the river for heat rejection or extraction, depending on the season.
