This 750sf apartment was renovated to accommodate the needs of a young family. The project was an exercise in implementing sustainable design ideas on a shoe-string budget. The main move was to knock two small rooms in front half of the apartment together to connect the kitchen, living and dining rooms into one large space. The back room (formerly the kitchen) was turned into a guest bedroom. Formaldehyde free cabinetry and solid wood countertops were used to create storage and work spaces. Existing plumbing fixtures were replaced with low-flow models. The entire apartment was painted pure white to maximize the penetration of natural light. On the exterior the old air conditioner was replaced with a high-efficiency model and the roofing was replaced with an energy-star rated asphalt shingle.
