The 17,600sf East Valley Multi-Purpose Center for Senior Citizens
will accommodate a range of services and needs of the east valley
senior user groups while making a facility that can create a distinct
identity for the park and larger community. The design establishes an
identifiable park presence on street edge along Van Nuys Boulevard, and
creates an interface with the street and a gateway between the park and
the city.
The building form draws from two different groups of local historical
precedent - the area’s agricultural history, and the wave of postwar
modernist housing development that populated the Valley. The overall
color palette relates to the variety of produce grown in the area. The
fuschias, reds and oranges of the street edge infuse the facade with
urban character, while on the park side, greens, yellows and blues
relate
to the natural character of the park. The colors of the park
pavilion continue the park side greens, yellows and blues, while its
openness helps bring light into the structure and provides views out to
the surrounding park landscape. The pavilion is topped with a planted
“green roof” that helps keep the building interior cool, reducing energy
consumption.
The building’s massing helps to reinforce the street edge and creates a
ceremonial gate into the park. A securable perimeter fence and low tough
planting limit direct approach to the building from the Van Nuys
Boulevard, and limited low windows discourage vandalism.
