Conceived as a partnership project to support underrepresented citizens and the Helping Our People Excel (HOPE) initiative, the proposed East Tampa Chess park project is a redevelopment of an existing vacant parcel central the historically Black, East Tampa community. This space is envisioned to enrich the neighboring community, concretize a place of intellectual equity, and capitalize on its vibrant local heritage. Dubbed "Bishop Park," it will introduce a unique feature destination to the City of Tampa park system. The essential nature of this outdoor park is to be a cross-cultural meeting place where visitors and local residents will cultivate open minds, encounter new perspectives about problem solving, hone their creativity, and embrace resolving challenges through social engagement. This project is closely adjacent to the East Tampa Hope Center and program features were informed by its initiatives in hopes of providing an inviting stage for the theatre of intrapersonal engagement. With the support of neighborhood business owners, the design is being presented to city leaders in order to garner funding and bring it to fruition.
