The boathouse, a long, wooden, crafted building, reaching out from the city, extending and hovering over the water. Wooden ramps reaching down to the water surface provide access from the vessel to the water. A platform unfolds below the building to shade the amphitheaterfor lessons, demonstrations and entertainment. The enclosure is two systems combined to anchor and invite. Onesystem: brownstone walls, enclose the industrious boat building workshop that is illuminated from above by a translucent light box that harkens back to the industrial monitors found throughout the neighborhood and glows like a beacon at night. The second, a slat-board wall and deck system, holds and protects the handcrafted boats above the water. The slat-walls mimic, in their shape, material and rigor, the fastidiously laid planks of the boats themselves, while allowing a moody, diffuse light to penetrate the space and highlight thegraceful lines of the kayaks and row boats. At night, the slatwalls return a soft glow.Between the two systems, a circulation path leads to the community room and cafe, off ering a presentation of the newest handcrafted product and dramatic views of all that has been forgotten by the Brooklyn waterfront - views of the Manhattan skyline, of wetlands and of migratory birds.
