This apartment building is a contemporary addition to a heritage listed residential complex in East Melbourne. The block itself and the surrounding land were already densely built over leaving little scope to develop the site. This posed challenges to maximise yield and address amenity impacts and heritage constraints.
Our new structure behind two apartment blocks was designed to complement the existing art deco buildings that make the neighbourhood character. The scale and form match the existing buildings; for the facade we opted for a contemporary interpretation of dominating art deco facade elements. Our scheme received planning approval very promptly which indicates that our approach was widely accepted.
