ADP’s design for the East Building provides the University of Bath with a state-of-the-art building, designed to the highest environmental standards. This three-storey building contains a 350-seat lecture theatre, teaching labs, mixed general teaching accommodation and flexible office spaces.Accommodating the Department of Computer Sciences, it also provides seminar and meeting rooms with interactive whiteboards, lecture rooms with the latest audio-visual facilities, as well as several comfortable social areas.Sustainability is an important aspect of the East Building and a number of features have been incorporated to ensure it achieved the highest BREEAM rating possible. The accommodation is arranged around a large central atrium to increase the amount of natural daylight flowing into the building and to aid its ventilation strategy. Daylight sensors help to reduce the artificial lighting requirement, whilst Termodeck technology is used for heating, cooling and ventilation.Horizontal bands of windows, on the long (east and west) façades, provide natural light. The use of timber on several elements of the façade, as well as using the existing site levels and landscaping, softens the visual impact of the building from the adjacent Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.Energy use is further reduced via the photovoltaic panels positioned on the roof that offset approximately 10% of the building’s carbon emissions. A public energy consumption meter is used to demonstrate the building’s efficiency to students and staff. The East Building won the Best Technical Innovation and Best Sustainable Building LABC Building Excellence Awards.
