The area was hit by an earthquake on 8th October 2005 which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale and killed between 70,000 - 80,000 people. Article 25 were approached by the international NGO Muslim Aid to develop building designs and lead workshops that would enable local people to take part in the reconstruction by illustrating how they can rebuild safely using a small amount of aid and their reclaimed building materials. In addition, Article 25 were appointed to assist with the design and construction of seismic resistant houses for the most vulnerable members of the community who were not able to re-build themselves.
